Review: Biriyani

Movie- Biriyani

Language- Tamil

Genre- Thriller/comedy

Director- Venkat Prabhu

Cast- Karthi, Hansika, Premji and others…

You all know that I had stopped reviewing after watching Alex Pandian. And now it has taken another Karthi movie to break my procrastination, well it can be attributed to this Venkat Prabhu's diet.

If you are not a great fan of Venkat Prabhu genre of movies this could not be the movie for you. And this at last redeems Karthi and takes him into the league of successful heroes.

The movie is usual with no use-heroine, comedies, item number, extra large fights, and coming of police in the climax, and of course with a positive ending.

There is something with Venkat Prabhu and his brand of movie making. There is his usual coterie of gang from Chennai 28, including new addition SAM ANDERSON (wow!), and there is the usual saree clad hottie dancing (And it’s getting better with every movie of his!), Yuvan’s songs, Thala reference, “Enna Kodumai Sir” dialogue appeared once (Thankfully!) and they have made fun of themselves.

The movie is not bad, and it’s not the run of the mill formula movie. Karthi plays the playboy with ease and looks stylish, also that new contact lens works for him, Premji is real funny, and Hansika does not have much scope. The highlight is Nasser. He’s just awesome, his versatility comes out in the scene imitating Premji, hats off sir. And loved Uma Riaz’s role, good to see women doing stunts and hurting the hero and his ego. The movie does not drag and ends quickly with a good twist. Why do the villains have to explain everything to the hero in the climax, are the characters so dumb or may be directors find it obligatory to explain it to the audience (I could remember “If you want to shoot, shoot, don’t talk” dialogue from ‘The good, the bad and the ugly’). The chase scenes were ok, and music of Yuvan (100th) is not worth mentioning, none of the songs could be remembered. But movie and songs are stylishly shot, but sadly there are no foreign exotic locales in the offing, and also Venkat does not tire us with romantic duets (Thank god! only one was there!).

Overall: Good movie, definitely watchable. Do catch the return of the Karthi, hopefully good sense prevails to this actor. Watch it in theaters near you.

P.S:  And Venkat sir has proved once again. His movie is fun and exciting both for us and the people who work in it, since the enjoyment of the cast and crew can be seen translated onscreen. Keep up the good work Mr.Venkat sir.

Review: Alex Pandian

Movie- Alex Pandian- அலெக்ஸ் பாண்டியன்

Language- Tamil

Genre- Action/Comedy

Director- Suraaj

Cast- Karthi, Anushka, Santhanam and others.

Ha! This is going to be my shortest movie review… well EVER!

First things first, have you booked for this movie, hmm I pity you brother/sister.

And my dear friends who are going to book for this movie, stop it right there, well go ahead if you are love couples expecting an empty theatre and suicide oriented people ( like those with bipolar disorder, especially ‘3’ like Dhanush personalities), others please refrain from doing so, trust me, this little piece of free advice is going to save your 120 bucks (in case you are in Chennai!, others ignore and do fill in your own city’s rates) and also from severe headache.

Thank you Tamil industry for giving us directors like Suraaj, it makes life a lot easier for us reviewers, but one suggestion is that, they certainly need to provide for the aspirin we take after watching their creation or at least a statutory warning before the movie indicating the aftereffects of watching their movie.

GiRissh VerDict( I have introduced this new scale henceforth to be known as GiR-VeR which tries to capture the essence of the movie in one word, so here it goes my first GiR-VeR)- DUMB

So since we have already established that the movie is Dumb, there is nothing much you can expect as a story. Well if you still insist.

A stupid kidnapper ( Mr.Alexpandian) who does petty kidnappings( but owns a Merc!) is asked to kidnap CM’s daughter(yeh! of course it is Anushka). There is a gang of morons some NRI dude (Milind) who goes around in overalls in Chennai (haha!), a doctor who looks more like a bouncer, and a swamiji a Nithy imitator (Jai Nithy!) with more bunch of other idiots. Some stupid scheme to introduce some medicine in Tamilnadu which our CM (Visu) is not giving approval, hence they ask Alex to kidnap the lady. So everything goes according to plan, when our lady discovers EERAM (Wetness!) in our Hero’s heart and ask her kidnapper to save her. Ha! Then we/you/ everybody know what is going to happen. They get chased, and somehow end up in our Santhanam’s home. And once again they try getting back the lady to the CM, a pathetic twist (black sheep in midst!), once again fight. Oh! Our heroine falls for her kidnapper guy (still figuring it out WHY!), and climax, TA DAN! All’s well that ends well (as far as the movie is concerned, and for us we are left with a lingering headache).

Well the above mentioned to you is the best coherent story of the movie, which I pieced together, phew! It was difficult than a level 5 Sudoku.

There is nothing good in the movie. I don’t know how they can make a movie like this. Seriously do they really watch the movie they made, if they had done, well at least once, they would have known the pathetic crap they have made. Even a kid could direct a better movie. Yes I don’t expect logic in movies like this as they are only for the MASS! But still there are basic elements of a movie like story, screenplay, dialogues which needs to be there. I found everything lagging in this movie. No story as such, poor screenplay and dialogues with loud noise by DSP.

There is not much review to do. As said before everything was below average. Well! Wait my dear folks. The only decent thing about this movie is Santhanam. Well his jokes too are not that great, but compared to rest of the movie, felt it was the best. He carries the first half. Some jokes evoke laughter. Don’t expect a SMS or Polathavan Santhanam here.

So you can better catch those Santhanam’s comedy in Aditya or any other channel when they put up pongal special programs. Please don’t waste your time by going to theatre.

Since there are only Cons, and no Pros, I am skipping directly to overall section of my review.

Overall: Could not find one good thing to say about this movie. Sad that directors expect people to be dumb, else how would you expect a movie having no story, screenplay, and every department falling flat. You would have already guessed, this is not the movie to be seen anytime (even on TV!). Even if you are a Karthi fan, better watch his Paruthiveeran or even Paiya once again. As I first mentioned, if you have already booked for this sorry, as a precaution better get an aspirin. Wait for my other reviews of this season, and hopefully praying that at least they be good. Personally I would recommend suing the producer/director for using Thalivar’s Iconic name (AlexPandian) and making a poor show of it.

P.S- Oh! How bad of me to forget this. There was still a saving grace for the movie. And it was… the trailer of KADAL. Thank god, I was able to smile for at least few minutes; it was like sunshine through a heavy cloudy bad weather day. And the trailer looks awesome. Gautam karthik looks good, like his father in Alaigal Oivathillai. Some strong performances from Arjun, Aravind samy (and he looks good too! hurray to his fans), I didn’t like Thulasi Nair much though (should wait and watch). Well there you go, I could have better reviewed this trailer than the movie above. Sorry for dragging the Post script. It should have made the headlines. Well fingers crossed and waiting for Kadal.

P.P.S- Hopefully PowerStar succeeds! Jai Powerstar!
